Freely opening up to the process of growing in all aspects of life, particularly in their relationships with those who are the most important to them, is a powerful path that all people need to explore. Boston-based singer-songwriter Sam Bergquist is embarking on that necessary journey on his deeply personal folk-Americana EP, ‘Wiser Then,’ which is now streaming on digital platforms.

On each of the four tracks on the acoustic, authentic roots-infused album, the musician delivers a compelling glimpse into his personal philosophy, particularly his belief that people’s relationships with others are the most important thing in life. The tunes featured on ‘Wiser Then’ reflect his desire as a person and songwriter to not only keep improving, but also better understand himself, particularly in the ways that he relates to others. In order to do so, Bergquist borrows from the musical and lyrical storytelling style of such fellow folk-Americana-country singer-songwriters as Bob Dylan, John Hiatt, Josh Ritter and Steve Earle

‘Wiser Then’ begins with its opening single, ‘Do Things Different,’ which introduces Bergquist’s vital message that it’s important for people to follow the path they feel compelled to embark on. Accompanied by a stellar blend of acoustic and rhythm guitar and bursts of the harmonica, his vocals are passionate and earnest as he proclaims that he doesn’t know where he’s headed in life. But he’s determined to learn new ways to improve himself as he sets out in the world, leading the life he wants to pursue.

The inspirational anthem then transitions into the sophomore track on Bergquist’s new record, ‘Am I Wiser?’ The tune takes an introspective look at the musician’s past and how things are going for him now, as he ponders the titular question. The prosaic song, which is driven by country-driven guitars that are inspired by George Strait’s tracks from the 1990s, is a classic story told from the perspective of an experienced man who’s reflecting on his life.

Bergquist admits on ‘Am I Wiser?’ that when he was younger, the prospect of adulthood seemed like a prison that’s meant to hold back his vision, as he was told to get a grip on reality. However, he now realizes that the unknown that accompanied being younger offered him more endless opportunities to pursue his dreams and not be as tainted by the past.

‘Wiser Then’ then transitions into its third entry, ‘Darlin,’ which continues with the theme of embracing the open road that leads people to their dreams. But during the tune, Bergquist also divulges that he’s made peace with his faults, and is ready to move on with his life and relationships. He’s experienced growth, and is at the point of being able to properly share his life with the people he cares about. His enthralling vocals and lyrical prowess are highlighted by his range with on his guitar.

The singer’s declaration that he’s tired of being alone and will never leave the people he loves on ‘Darlin’ is followed by the EP’s final entry, ‘You Give Me a Reason.’ The song, which is the most up-beat and lively on ‘Wiser Then,’ presents Bergquist in a relaxed and reassured state-of-mind, as he has accomplished his goal of being able to truly and fully reconnect with the people he loves. Singing against upbeat, Americana guitar riffs and the harmonica, he declares how his relationship helped him find purpose and cohesion in his life.

Bergquist’s newly released EP, ‘Wiser Then’ is a mellow collection of tracks with lively, relatable and heartfelt lyrics and vocals, which were supported by stellar Americana guitar riffs and the harmonica. The four tunes, which thrive on life, change, collective history and love, offer enthralling, vital insights into human behavior through the musician’s honest experiences. His captivating perspectives make the album a deeply personal, yet equally relatable, collection of tracks. The record needs to be heard by all adults who have realized that maintaining positive relationships is one of the most important ways for them to lead a fulfilling life.
