Video Interview: Ethan Suplee Talks God Is a Bullet (Exclusive)

This interview was conducted prior to the start of the current SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike.

Even the most flawed people who haven’t always repented for their past sins deserve retribution for, and closure from, others who have caused them lasting immense pain. That’s certain the case for Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Maika Monroe’s wrongfully targeted characters of cult escapee Case Hardin and former vice detective Bob Hightower in the new action thriller, ‘God is a Bullet.’

The film’s struggling protagonists must garner the courage and strength to fight back against the cult’s leaders, including those played by Karl Glusman and Ethan Suplee, who have taken so much away from them both. The ruthless antagonists, including Glusman’s Cyrus and his enforcer, Gutter, who’s played by Suplee, will take whatever measures necessary to stop Case and Hightower from causing them the same pain of taking away the very thing they cherish the most: power and control over the remaining members of their criminal satanic cult.

‘God is a Bullet,’ which also stars Jamie Foxx, January Jones, Paul Johansson and Jonathan Tucker, is based on author Boston Teran’s best-selling 1999 novel of the same name. The screen adaptation was written and directed by ‘The Notebook’ helmer, Nick Cassavetes. The filmmaker previously garnered fame in the crime and thriller genres when he penned and helmed ‘Alpha Dog’ and directed ‘John Q,’ the latter of which marked his first collaboration with Suplee.

‘God is a Bullet,’ which marks Cassavetes’s first directorial effort in almost a decade, following his work on the 2014 rom-com, ‘The Other Woman,’ is now available on all digital platforms. His new movie’s digital release comes after it was distributed in theaters on June 23 by Wayward Entertainment.

In ‘God is a Bullet,’ when Hightower discovers that his ex-wife was murdered and his teenage daughter was kidnapped by the cult, he sets out to do whatever it takes to save her. Not trusting his colleagues to find his daughter and bring her home alive, he quits the force to look for her on his own. He locates and convinces Case, the cult’s only female victim escapee, to help him rescue his daughter.

With the help of The Ferryman (Foxx), the duo go undercover together. They set out to save Hightower’s daughter and find closure for Case from the cult, which took so much away from them both.

Suplee generously took the time the week of Good is a Bullet’s theatrical release in June (prior to the start of the current SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike) to talk about starring in the screen adaptation during an exclusive interview. Among other things, the actor discussed what convinced him to play Gutter in the drama; what his experience of reuniting with Cassavetes on the new film after working together two decades ago on ‘John Q;’ and how he emotionally and physically prepared to play Gutter in the thriller.
