Social Activist Bella Abzug Fought For Equal Credit For All Women in Exclusive Clip Premiere For Documentary ‘Bella!’

Bella Abzug devoted her life to securing equal pay, equal opportunity and equal credit for all women throughout her accomplished career in the 20th century. Women are still upholding that powerful legacy in modern society, which is being chronicled in the upcoming documentary, ‘Bella!’

The film about the renowned feminist, who worked as a lawyer, politician, social activist and a leader in the women’s movement, is set to open at the Village East by Angelika on Friday, August 18. It will then be released in Los Angeles at the Laemmle  Monica Film Center the following week, on Friday, August 25. In honor of the feature’s release, Film Factual is exclusively premiering a clip from the project, which is titled ‘Equal Credit.’

‘Bella!’ was written and directed by Emmy Award-nominated filmmaker, Jeff L. Lieberman (‘The Amazing Nina Simone’). He also served as a producer on the movie with Jamila C. Fairley.

Lieberman attended the feature’s first preview screening on Sunday, July 30, when it served as the Closing Night Film at The San Francisco Jewish Film Festival at the Castro Theatre. He was joined at the event by Nancy Pelosi, who appears in the documentary, when she introducing the screening.

‘Bella!’ shows that as Kamala Harris and Pelosi lead the nation, they travel a path blazed by several women before them, notably Bella Abzug. In 1970, when the United States was ruled by men, Abzug challenged the status quo, running a successful campaign from the streets of Manhattan that elevated her all the way to the halls of Congress. With her trademark hat and Bronx swagger, Abzug entered Congress swinging, battling for credit cards for women, equality for the LGBTQ community and trailblazing a path for leadership that reflected the broad diversity of the country.

But, the most recognizable woman in politics also became the target of a Washington establishment resistant to change. With her eyes set on breaking the boys’ club of The US Senate or becoming New York’s first female mayor, Abzug battled mounting forces from both the right and the left, and the powers of the Nixon Administration, the CIA, FBI and even The New York Times.

Using never-before-seen home movies, audio diaries, and a vast trove of newly-discovered news footage, the movie delves into a colorful and gritty era where one woman sacrificed her own political ambitions for future generations of female leadership.

Besides Pelosi, the film includes interviews with Hilary Rodham Clinton, Barbara Streisand, Shirley Maclaine, Lily Tomlin, Congresswoman Maine Waters, Gloria Steinem, Phil Donahue, Congressman Charles Rangel, Marlo Thomas and many more.
