Filmmaker Malcolm Ingram is launching his own home entertainment distribution company, Mercantile Instinct with the release of his film, ‘Clerk.’ The release of the biographical documentary will feature both a VHS and Blu-Ray, which are both available for presale. The home release’s wide distribution will follow on Tuesday, September 26. The movie’s VHS and Blu-Ray copies will only be available via Mercantile Instinct’s website.
The ‘Clerk’ Blu-Ray will have a base price of $34.95. Ingram and Kevin Smith will also sign versions of the Blu-ray for $49.95. The Blu-Ray will include such special features as new commentary with Smith and Ingram; extended interviews with Stan Lee, Judd Nelson, Jason Reitman and Richard Linklater; new interviews with Ralph Garman and Joe Manganiello; and extended introduction; an alternate ending; the official trailer; commentary with the Stanley Brother: join Sean Stanley (‘Clerk editor) and his brother Warren (teaser poster designer) as they discuss the film and their experiences being fans who made it good; and an immersive behind the scenes documentary examining the life and career of Smith, an indie filmmaking and cultural icon.
“Distribution is a mess. A recent situation motivated me to decide to use my 30 years’ experience working in the industry and throw my hat in the ring. I grew up in video stores. I love physical media. And the notion of controlling the fate of movies I put my heart and soul into just makes sense. And hopefully soon, I can help other filmmakers get their work seen as well,” Ingram said.
“Mercantile Instinct is what every storyteller needs if they want to get their work into the hands and hearts of the audience. The Mercantile Instinct website represents best how a filmmaker can distribute direct to the consumer,” Smith said.
‘Clerk’ follows Smith as a first-time director from before he takes the world by surprise at the Sundance Film Festival with his seminal indie comedy sensation ‘Clerks’ and follows his life and cinematic output since. Like the filmmaker’s movies, the documentary examines his affinity for countless juicy topics from male relationships and sexuality to religious fanaticism and comic book culture.
The documentary uses interviews, clips, testimonials and never-before-seen archival footage. ‘Clerk,’ which was written, directed and produced by Mercantile, is a colorful oral history of one of the entertainment industry’s most incredible journeys, as told by his friends and collaborators, industry professionals and Smith himself.
Following ‘Clerk,’ Mercantile Instinct will continue with releases of Ingram’s ‘Continental’ and ‘Phantom of Winnipeg’ in the next year.
