Being embattled in the frontlines of war isn’t always the most traumatizing and deadly aspect of a war. In the new Civil War movie, ‘Freedom’s Path,’ after a Union soldier flees from battle and is rescued by a free Black man, they must fight back together against a ruthless and desperate slave catcher, in order to save their lives once again.
The Forge is distributing the historical drama on North American VOD and Digital platforms today, October 6, following the feature’s theatrical release earlier this month. In honor of ‘Freedom’s Path’s digital distribution, Film Factual is premiering an exclusive clip from the feature.
The movie was written, directed and produced by Brett Smith. ‘Freedom’s Path’ stars Gerran Howell (‘1917’), RJ Cyler (‘Me and Earl and the Dying Girl’), Ewen Bremner (‘T2 Trainspotting’), Afemo Omilami (‘Forrest Gump,’ ‘True Detective’), the late Thomas Jefferson Byrd (‘Set It Off’), Steven Swadling (the ‘Kickboxer’ series) and Harrison Gilbertson (‘Oppenheimer’).
In ‘Freedom’s Path,’ after a Union soldier, William (Howell), flees from battle, rescue comes unexpectedly from a free Black man, Kitch (Cyler), who’s operating a section of the Underground Railroad. But when a ruthless and desperate slave catcher, Silas (Bremner), discovers the secret network, he conspires to bring it burning to the ground.
“We are thrilled to collaborate with The Forge, as it continuously strives for innovative solutions to improve the landscape for independent filmmakers. Its unwavering dedication to pushing boundaries and exploring alternative models of distribution and sales is a testament to (founder) Mark Sayre’s passion for filmmaking,” Smith said about collaborating with the distributor on releasing the drama digitally.
“(Director) Brett Smith and the entire ‘Freedom’s Path team have achieved the remarkable feat of showcasing exceptional talent in every facet of production. The Forge couldn’t be more excited to launch its distribution arm with a film that demands to be seen,” said Mark Mathias Sayre, Chairman and CEO at The Forge.
