While many people yearn to explore their own sense of identity and love as they come-of-age, they can also struggle to break free from outside influence and control over their emotions. That’s certainly the case for Austin-based indie pop singer-songwriter Bill Godfrey, who allows himself to freely explore his own personal expressions on his recently released five-track folktronica debut EP, ‘Hypnotized.’

The album explores how the mind seeks influence, which leads to all manners of trouble. Each entry on the multi-instrumentalist-composer’s new record explores a means of influence over the mind, by way of fear, grief, co-dependence and even malice.

Godfrey exudes soul and storytelling insight into his indie rock-inspired songs, much like such similar indie folk-rock singer-songwriters as Jose Gonzales, Jeff Buckley and Sufjan Stevens, through his emotionally charged vocal delivery. Godfrey, who grew up in rural Texas and started playing music at a young age, blends traditional and modern elements seamlessly. As a result, he created a sonic experience on his new EP that’s both thought-provoking and emotionally profound.

The ‘Hypnotized’ album begins with its titular track, which is the most memorable and commercial entry on the record. In stellar vocals and relatable, brilliant lyrics, Godfrey exudes a relatable message about the downfalls and traps of a romance gone wrong.

Accompanied by an alluring acoustic guitar, pounding percussive beats, moody keys and pulsating horns that create an aura of folk charm, Godfrey crafts a stunning, relatable narrative. He croons in haunting but soothing vocals about how he finds it difficult to leave the woman he’s romantically involved with because he’s hypnotized by her, in part by longing and nostalgia. Overall, the eponymous track is a gripping thematic representation of the entire EP.

The brooding ‘Hypnotized’ tune is followed by the album’s lighter sophomore entry, ‘Sprightly Gentleman,’ which proves the artist’s versatility. The upbeat electronica-indie rock song begins with a hypnotic acoustic blend of instrumentals, including an infectious bassline. The intro smoothly transitions into Godfrey’s boisterous vocals and guest instrumentalist’s Ray Zepeda’s engaging, toe-tapping saxophone solo.

Another engaging entry on ‘Hypnotized’ is the electronic-rock-influenced penultimate track, ‘Mama Help Me.’ The tune features a stylistic blend of nostalgic rock vocals and instrumentals, including a gritty electric guitar solo from guest musician Marshall Gallagher, and an electronic-infused atmospheric production. Against the instrumentals, Godfrey proclaims that he’ll fight back against anyone who’s trying to suppress him on the overall intriguingly futuristic song.

Overall, the ‘Hypnotized’ EP combines elements of indie pop and rock, folk and electronica, which results in a dynamic genre-defying sound that pushes the boundaries of traditional styles. Godfrey’s debut record offers a poignant and introspective exploration of a young mind’s struggle to find identity and love while also grappling with external control and influence, particularly on its standout titular track.

The album takes listeners on a captivating journey of self-discovery exploring themes of fear, grief, co-dependence and malice throughout its versatile five tunes. In his natural ability to seamlessly blend traditional and modern elements through his emotionally charged delivery, Godfrey created an auditory experience that’s thought-provoking and emotionally relatable.
