Toronto After Dark Film Festival 2023 Video Interview: Jeremy LaLonde Talks Daniel’s Gotta Die (Exclusive)

One of the most horrifying aspects of modern society is that many people will do whatever it takes to slay the competition in order to receive what they believe is owed to them. That’s certainly the case for the sparring siblings in the new horror comedy, ‘Daniel’s Gotta Die,’ who are forced to go on a family vacation together in order to bond like a what society considers to be a normal family.

The Canadian mystery thriller was written by Matthew Dressel, and directed and edited by Jeremy LaLonde. The feature stars Joel David Moore, Jason Jones, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Carly Chaikin, Chantel Riley, Dax Ravina, Varun Saranga, Iggy Pop and the late Bob Saget in his final film role.

‘Daniel’s Gotta Die’ is set to have its Toronto Premiere during this month’s horror, sci-fi and action-based film festival, Toronto After Dark. LaLonde will be in attendance, along with select cast and crew members, at the project’s screening at the festival to participate in a post-screening Q&A. The screening and Q&A will be held tomorrow, Friday, October 20 at 7:00pm ET at the Scotiabank Theatre in Toronto.

‘Daniel’s Gotta Die’ follows a modern-day wealthy family who will do anything to receive what they believe is owed to them granted by the death of their rich father. The pressure grows when the four siblings, who, on a regular day would never speak to each other, are forced to go on a family vacation hosted by their father’s right-hand man in order to learn how love each other.

While three of the siblings are cruel, selfish and oblivious to the true meaning of family, Daniel (Moore) is the happy-go-lucky type of brother who wants nothing but to see a smile on his relatives’ faces. As their hunger for the inheritance money grows, they embark on a series of hilarious failed attempts to take what they assume is owed to them.

Daniel is the one sibling who doesn’t have an ulterior motive, so the siblings ponder if their father may have loved him the most out of them all, and left him his entire fortune. The events that take place during the vacation also make the family question if their relatives can be trusted as they all vie for the money, instead of bonding together during a time that normal families grieve.

LaLonde generously took the time earlier this week to talk about making the movie during an exclusive Zoom interview. The interview with the filmmaker, during which he discussed such topics as why he was inspired to helm Dressel’s script; how he cherished the experience of working with the ensemble cast, including Saget in his last feature role, in creating their characters’ sense of entitlement, humor and physicality; and what it means that he’s able to screen the Canadian feature at the Toronto-based horror festival; can be viewed in the above video.
