In honor of Trans Awareness Week taking place next week, Monday, Nov. 13 – Sunday, Nov. 19, 2023, Breaking Glass Pictures and Vanishing Angle are celebrating the new drama, ‘See You Then.’ During its film festival run, the project premiered at SXSW and won several Best Feature and Best Actress awards before being acquired by Breaking Glass Pictures.
The project was directed by trans filmmaker Mari Walker, who also co-wrote the script with Kristen Uno. The movie was produced by Uno, Schulman and Walker, as well as Matt Miller of Vanishing Angle.
Walker’s previous work has been accepted into more than 300 film festivals, including Sundance, SXSW, Frameline and Outfest. The movies have garnered over 90 awards and 57 nominations.
After spending much of her career editing, Walker’s first narrative short film, ‘Swim,’ won Best Narrative Short at the Los Angeles Film Festival in 2017. She then continued her collaboration with Vanishing Angle with ‘See You Then,’ which marks her first feature film.
Set in a small town outside Los Angeles, ‘See You Then’ follows Kris (Pooya Mohseni, ’Madam Secretary,’ ‘Falling Water’), a transgender computer programmer, and Naomi (Lynn Chen, ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ ‘Shameless’), an Asian performance artist, as they meet for the first time since they dated 15 years ago, before Kris’ transition. Throughout one night, they engage in increasingly intimate and revealing conversations before a shocking revelation sends everything spiraling out of control. The drama focuses on the universal truth that no matter how much you change, a part of you will always stay the same.
The mission of the filmmakers is to inject diversity into the greater canon of film and, in doing so, raise the voices of marginalized communities. ‘See You Then’ focuses specifically on the LGBTQIA+ and Asian American communities, which the filmmakers cumulatively belong to. The filmmakers have laid incredible groundwork to represent diversity in their team, both on-screen and behind the camera. Besides Mohseni and Chen, ‘See You Then’ also stars Nican Robinson (‘Thunder Road,’ ‘13 Reasons Why’) and Danny Jacobs (‘American Crime Story,’ ‘The Mandalorian’).
