New York Film Critics Online (NYFCO) Award the Best Films of 2023

On Dec. 15, 2023, the New York Film Critics Online (NYFCO) announced its selections for the best in film for 2023. The voting process was conducted virtually. 

Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,’ released by Apple Original Films and Paramount Pictures, won the group’s prize for Best Picture.

Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ was NYFCO’s most-honored film with four awards. Nolan received the group’s Best Director prize for the Universal Studios-released movie, while star Cillian Murphy was named Best Actor, and Hoyte van Hoytema won for Best Cinematography. Additionally, the movie’s cast won Best Ensemble.

With three awards, Justine Triet’s ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ was NYFCO’s second most-honored film. Sandra Hüller received the group’s Best Actress prize; Triet and co-writer, Arthur Harari, won for Best Screenplay; and the Neon-released drama was selected as Best International Feature.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph was named Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Alexander Payne’s ‘The Holdovers,’ from Focus Features; Mark Ruffalo won Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Poor Things, from Searchlight; and NYFCO voters recognized Charles Melton as Breakthrough Performer for his role in Todd Haynes’s ‘May December’ from Netflix.

Additional awards went to Celine Song as Best Debut Director for her first feature, ‘Past Lives;’ Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ for Best Use of Music; ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ for Best Animated Feature; and ‘The Eternal Memory’ for Best Documentary.
