People’s behaviors are often shaped – and trapped – by a single way of thinking, which often prevents them from reflecting on and questioning the things they take for granted. But Itto, the protagonist of the new sci-fi thriller, ‘Animalia,’ who hails from a modest rural background, is now slowly adapting to the Moroccan privileged codes of her husband’s family, due to unforeseen circumstances.
The chilling women-led mystery drama, which premiered at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, is now available On Demand and Digital, courtesy of Dark Star Pictures. In honor of the movie’s official release, Film Factual is premiering an exclusive first-look clip from the feature, which is titled ‘Green Storm.’
The project, which won the New Visions Award, has received critical acclaim for its meditative, genre-defying storytelling. ‘Animalia’ was written and directed by Sundance Grand Jury winner, Sofia Alaoui. The thriller, which is in French, Arabic and Berber, stars Oumaïma Barid, Mehdi Dehbi, and Fouad Oughaou.
In ‘Animalia,’ Itto (Barid) begins experiencing supernatural events, which put Morocco in a state of emergency. As a result, she finds herself separated from her husband and new family. Alone, pregnant and looking for her way back, she finds emancipation.
