Actor Akili McDowell’s college dreams are clashing with the resolute reality of street vending in the heat of Atlanta’s gritty neighborhoods in the new crime drama, ‘The Waterboyz.’ The actor’s protagonist of Drew is striving to overcome the obstacles of leading a life on the streets to achieve his goal of becoming a graphic designer. The teen becomes even more inspired after he speaks with his guidance counselor, Charles, who’s played by Omar Dorsey. Drew’s determination is showcased in a new exclusive clip from the film, which is titled ‘Guidance.’
Quiver Distribution is releasing the movie in theaters this Friday, September 13, 2024. The project’s official release comes after it had its world premiere at the American Black Film Festival (ABFF), where filmmaker Coke Daniels won the Best Director award.
In addition to helming ‘The Waterboyz,’ Daniels also wrote and produced the feature. Besides McDowell, the drama also stars Quavo, La La Anthony, Omar Dorsey, Rockmund Dunbar and Antwar “AJ” Walker.
‘The Waterboyz’ takes place in the heat of Atlanta’s streets, where Drew’s college dreams clash with the gritty reality of street vending, alongside his best friend Dolo (Walker), who’s got simpler dreams of cars and girls. When their corner hustle draws dangerous attention from both gangs and cops, Drew is faced with a choice: the quick money of the streets or the long game towards a better life.
