Rock bands are often known for their drastic antics while they’re in the studio and on tour. Rising prog metal band, The Wrong Sides, is one such group that’s striving to be noticed by mainstream audiences, but not through the party antics that are typically found in the genre. The Puerto Rico-based band is instead driven by experimentation and high concepts in its compositions, including their latest instrumental songs, including ‘Sour Sea,’ ‘Chasing the Wrong Insanity’ and ‘Elephant Spaceship.’
The Wrong Sides have worked tirelessly on their craft to skillfully interweave progressive and metal fusion guitar riffs and drum beats into their tracks that are reminiscent of the sound of some of their contemporaries, including Dream Theater and Aristocrats. The Wrong Sides have perfected the sound of their instrumental singles by sampling them during live shows months before they release their albums. Based on their audiences’ reactions, the musicians tweak their tunes before their records’ official releases.
The group’s three latest tunes will be featured on their next album. Each of the songs, which have been compiled on the ‘Elephant Spaceship EP,’ highlight the sonic landscape of The Wrong Sides’ lineup.
For example, Joan Torres joined the band to help craft the progressive song ‘Sour Sea,’ on which he laid down a powerful groove and melodic bass solo. Overall, the track features the group’s signature uptempo vibe throughout the interweaving of its rock guitar riffs and drum beats.
The bassist later contributed to the arrangement for ‘Chasing the Wrong Insanity,’ which was inspired by the original soundtrack to the classic video game, ‘Maximum Carnage.’ ‘Chasing the Wrong Insanity’ is a true fusion tune that interweaves qualities of thrash, grunge and death metal in a unique way.
Most recently, the band crafted ‘Elephant Spaceship,’ which started with a simpler idea by guitarist Israel Romero. The song evolved as the group’s guitarists added grooves on the thrash guitar, and Jose Linares infused death metal drums into the track. The instrumentals’ melodic, fretless phrases, psychedelic tinge and progressive groove helped turn the single into a classic prog metal tune.
The Wrong Sides has proven with their three recent singles that they truly value the compositions and messages they infuse into their songs. Each lyricless track stands out for including its own concept and experimentation solely through its instrumentation. The three singles on the ‘Elephant Spaceship’ EP feature expert artistry and technique from the instrumentalists, which proves how committed the group is to craft their high-concepts experimentation.
