Publicly sharing their aspiration to overcome their long-held habits, and embrace the unpredictability of starting over in their work, can be an optimistic – and an equally threatening – experience for many musicians. Montague, Michigan-based experimental instrumentalist, Danny Peck has recently released a new 10-track electronica album, ‘Where Hope Goes, Fear Follows,’ which is grounded in people being released from all expectations.
The record is the musician’s most dynamic and personal collection of songs of his career. It embraces and reflects his evolution, as the tunes were written during a period of profound personal change. Inspired by such rock bands as Sigur Ros and Mogwai, ‘Where Hope Goes, Fear Follows’ lyrics embrace his growth, especially the triumphs he achieved as h set out to embark on a new journey.
Peck has released a music video for the LP’s titular track, which interweaves his signature lavish sound design and a new sense of spontaneity that sets it apart from his earlier work. The visual element of the song honors his dedicated research into the physics of music and how it’s engineered since the early 1990s.
The music video for ‘Where Hope Goes, Fear Follows’ is an intricately crafted introspective on the movement of music. The experimental-electronica tune features soulful silhouettes of people meditatively moving against scientific backdrops of bright, bursting colors. The enthralling visualls are set against hauntingly beautiful vocal chants of the title. The dramatic, emotive tune chronicles the evolution of an electronic-symphonic composer who combined both synth and string music to embrace a new soundscape.
The ‘Where Hope Goes, Fear Follows’ track and its accompanying music video, as well as the entire alum, thrive on the importance starting over. The music reflects on how Peck realized how important it is to reinvent himself, both in his personal and professional lives.
The instrumentalist made significant changes in 2023 when he and his wife moved to small town Michigan. After the change in location, he built a new studio and replaced all of his existing tracker-driven music making software, which he felt stifled his creativity. After installing and utilizing his new software on the ‘Where Hope Goes, Fear Follows’ record, the eponymous track became a prime example of how he is able to maintain his trademark lush sound design and intricate composition with a new sense of impulsivity and freedom.
