This month’s Tribeca Festival has once again claimed its stake as being one of the most vital, culturally relevant events in the entertainment industry in New York City. The festival, which is ending this Sunday, June 15 after taking over the titular neighborhood in Manhattan since June 4, has brought artists and audiences together. It has celebrated storytelling in all its forms, including film, and championed emerging and established voices through premieres and conversations.
Several movies have stood out amongst the Tribeca Festival‘s official selection this year, including the documentary, ‘Counting Crows: Have You Seen Me Lately?’ The HBO Documentary Films release was directed by Amy Scott. The movie had its World Premiere in the Spotlight Documentary section on June 5 at The Indeed Theater at Spring Studios.
‘Counting Crows: Have You Seen Me Lately?’ showcases how the titular band was catapulted into overnight fame by their massively successful debut album. The San Francisco indie rock band and their introspective frontman Adam Duritz were suddenly the biggest rockstars in the world, defiantly facing whatever came next. The film captures this pivotal crossroads through revealing interviews and evocative 1990’s archival to craft a rare story of artistic integrity in the spotlight.

Another noteworthy entry at this year’s Tribeca Festival was the music/biographical documentary, ‘The Rose: Come Back to Me.’ The movie, which was directed by Eugene Yi, is presented in English and Korean. The film had its World Premiere in the Spotlight + section on June 6 at The Indeed Theater at Spring Studios.
‘The Rose: Come Back to Me’ is an intimate documentary showcasing the dramatic rise of The Rose, the Korean indie rock band with roots in the K-pop training system. After cultivating a millions-strong global fanbase, a label dispute forces them into a years-long hiatus. Now, they are back, with an electrifying tour – on their own terms.

Another standout entry at this year’s Tribeca Festival was the action comedy, ‘Deep Cover.’ The movie was directed by Tom Kingsley (‘Ghosts,’ ‘Black Pond’), and written by Derek Connolly (‘Jurassic World’ franchise, ‘Safety Not Guaranteed’), Colin Trevorrow (‘Jurassic World’ franchise), Ben Ashenden (‘Live at the Moth Club’) and Alexander Owen (‘Dreaming Whilst Black’).
The film features an all-star cast including Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, Nick Mohammed, Paddy Considine and Sonoya Mizuno. The comedy also features Ian McShane and Sean Bean.
‘Deep Cover’ had its International Premiere in the festival’s Spotlight Narrative section on June 10 at OKX Theater at BMCC TPAC. The movie opens today on Prime Video.
‘Deep Cover’ follows Kat (Howard), an improv comedy teacher, as she beginning to question if she’s missed her shot at success. Then an undercover cop, Billings (Bean), surprisingly offers her the role of a lifetime. So she recruits two of her students, Marlon and Hugh (Bloom and Mohammed), to infiltrate London’s gangland by impersonating dangerous criminals.

Another powerful film at this year’s Tribeca Festival was the documentary, ‘It’s Dorothy!’ The movie explores meaning, evolution and legacy of the cherished titular character of Dorothy Gale from ‘The Wizard of Oz.’ her long-lasting impact is shown through a chorus of cultural icons, unforgettable music and a remix of archival and cinematic art, while putting the perspectives of women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ voices front and center.
The documentary is the second feature from director Jeffrey McHale. He previously helmed ‘You Don’t Nomi,’ which premiered at the Tribeca Festival in 2019. His new film was executive produced by Kevin S. Bright, the Emmy-winning producer of ‘Friends’ and ‘In Living Color.’
‘It’s Dorothy!’ features Amber Ruffin, Wicked author Gregory Maguire, John Waters, Lena Waithe, Margaret Cho, Roxane Gay, Rufus Wainwright. The documentary also features numerous performers who have portrayed Dorothy through the eras, including Ashanti, Fairuza Balk, Danielle Hope, Nichelle Lewis and Shanice Shantay.
‘It’s Dorothy!’ had its World Premiere in the Spotlight Documentary section on June 7 at Village East by Angelika. The movie will go on to play at Frameline next month.
