True evil is transcending death as the phone begins ringing again. Finn, the protagonist of the hit supernatural horror film series, ‘The Black Phone,’ is still contending being the sole survivor of The Grabber four years later in the franchise’s sequel, ‘Black Phone 2.’ Universal Pictures has released the official trailer and poster for the follow-up highlights the killer’s menacing return to the hero’s life.
In ‘Black Phone 2,’ Ethan Hawke returns to the franchise as The Grabber, who’s seeking vengeance on Finn (Mason Thames) from beyond the grave by menacing the teen’s younger sister, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw). As Finn, now 17, struggles with life after his captivity by The Grabber, the headstrong 15-year-old Gwen begins receiving calls in her dreams from the titular black phone. She also starts having disturbing visions of three boys being stalked at a winter camp known as Alpine Lake.
Determined to solve the mystery and end the torment for both her and her brother, Gwen persuades Finn to visit the camp during a winter storm. There, she uncovers a shattering intersection between The Grabber and her own family’s history. Together, the sister and brother team must confront a killer who has grown more powerful in death and more significant to them than either could imagine.
The drama was directed by genre veteran Scott Derrickson (‘Sinister,’ ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’) after he previously helmed the original feature. He also reunited with his frequent co-scribe, C. Robert Cargill, to pen ‘Black Phone 2,’ after they co-wrote its predecessor together. Both films in the series are based on characters created by Joe Hill.
The franchise’s second screen adaptation was produced by Jason Blum, Derrickson and Cargill. The drama’s executive producers are Hill, Adam Hendricks and Ryan Turek.
‘Black Phone 2’ also stars Demián Bichir (‘The Nun,’ ‘A Better Life’) as the supervisor of the camp, Arianna Rivas (‘A Working Man’) as his niece and Miguel Mora (‘The Black Phone’) as the brother of one of The Grabber’s victims. Jeremy Davies also returns as Finn and Gwen’s father, Terrence. Other new cast members include Maev Beaty (‘Beau is Afraid’) and Graham Abbey (‘Under the Banner of Heaven’).
Universal Pictures and Blumhouse distributed ‘The Black Phone’ in theaters in 2022. Upon its release, the movie received widespread critical acclaim and earned more than $160 million worldwide.
