Alternative soundscapes often drive the most mysterious and contemplative elements and principles of music compositions. That’s certainly true for composer and sound designer Guido Affini’s dynamic ambient-driven single, ‘Lulla By – [Modulo#5 Vs.].’ The post-rock/free jazz song is a gripping, atmospheric and immersive arrangement that builds its momentum through rhythmic beats. Those pulsating riffs are largely driven by the guitar work of Affini’s friend and collaborator, Federico Fantuz.
The Genoa-based electronic musician crafted a compelling ambient‑experimental track. The tune was original composed as a soundscape for ‘Nothing,’ a theatrical production by Balletto Civile and Michela Lucenti that’s loosely based on ‘King Lear.’
‘Lulla By’s true strength lies in its immersive, evolving blend of instruments. It weaves ambient textures with subtle rhythms, which rise and fall in intensity. Besides the inclusion of Fantuz’s guitar improvisation, the single is also driven by ethereal synths and shimmering layers early on in the composition. The glass harmonica and field recordings that were logged in the forests of Borneo also help drive the song’s dynamic soundscape.
Given its origin as theatrical music, the piece evokes drama and tension. The relatively quiet, ethereal opening builds toward something more intense in the latter half. As a result, the track achieves a satisfying crescendo.
Affini’s interest in blending ambient/drone, post‑rock, free jazz, noise and alternative science elements gives the tune a rare quality. As a result, the single is textured, experimental and spiritually curious.
‘Lulla By – [Modulo#5 Vs.]’ is a satiating, atmospheric single from Affini. He proves with the song that he’s uncompromising in his approach to taking risks, as he utilizes any tool that inspires him. Through improvised post rock electronics, synth and guitar beats from Fantuz, the overall track proves to be a mesmerizing, ambient masterpiece.
