People often face moments of spiritual reckoning when they have the perspective of time to help them ponder their actions. That’s certainly the case for actor Ray McKinnon and his titular character in the critically acclaimed 2007 crime comedy, ‘Randy and the Mob.’
Lightyear Entertainment is not only celebrating the eponymous protagonist’s journey, but also the movie’s widespread praise over the past two decades. The indie film distributor is releasing the HD-restored version of the feature on Blu-ray tomorrow, April 7. In honor of the comedy’s re-release, Film Factual is debuting an exclusive clip from the project, which is titled ‘Pulled Over.’
McKinnon starred alongside three-time Emmy nominee, Walton Goggins in the movie. The two actors became friends when they meet on the 1990 NBC television film, ‘Murder in Mississippi.’ Soon after, the duo, along with McKinnon’s wife, the late Lisa Blount, forged one of independent cinema’s most distinctive creative partnerships. Their collaboration not only ultimately created ‘Randy and the Mob,’ but also the 2002 Academy Award-winning short film, ‘The Accountant.’
Lightyear Entertainment is bringing the movie to Blu-ray for the first time as a special Collector’s Edition. ‘Randy and the Mob’s Blu-ray will feature over 60 minutes of bonus material, including ‘The Accountant’ and a “Making-of” featurette with cast and crew interviews
Besides starring in ‘Randy and the Mob,’ McKinnon also served as the co-writer, director and co-producer. Goggins also served as a co-producer. The film features an ensemble cast including Tim DeKay (‘Bosch: Legacy,’ ‘Oppenheimer,’ ‘White Collar’), Bill Nunn (‘Sirens,’ ‘Spider Man 3’), Paul Ben-Victor (‘Nobody Wants This,’ ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan,’ ‘The Chosen’) and a special appearance by Burt Reynolds.
‘Randy and the Mob’ follows Randy Pearson (McKinnon) as he finds himself in deep trouble. The IRS and gangsters alike want their money. The only people left in his corner are his long-suffering wife, Charlotte (Blount), and his estranged gay twin brother, Cecil.
So Randy turns to Tino Armani (Goggins), a mob fixer with impeccable fashion sense, gourmet Italian tastes and a strangely prophetic worldview, for help. What follows is a madcap Southern caper that blends redemption, farce and spiritual awakening.
