The Art Directors Guild hands out prizes in three sections – period, fantasy, and contemporary – and Oscar voters still sometimes choose another film or two to fill out this category. Some of this year’s ADG picks are distinct longshots, like Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, The Batman, Bullet Train, Nope, and White Noise. The best bets include All Quiet on the Western Front, Babylon, Elvis, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Fabelmans, and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, while Tár and Top Gun: Maverick are possible too. Avatar: The Way of Water and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever both stand a good chance of being honored in this race given that the first films in their respective franchises both won this prize. Three other films made the BAFTA longlist: The Banshees of Inisherin, Empire of Light, and Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio, and though it’s neither a BAFTA or ADG pick, The Fabelmans is a strong possibility too.
