Oscar Winner Predictions: Best Original Screenplay

This category includes all six men also nominated for Best Director, with one additional nominee for The Fabelmans, Tony Kushner, who was previously cited for penning two Steven Spielberg-directed screenplays, Lincoln and Munich. This is Spielberg’s first mention in this category, though he has two Best Director wins, for Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan, and six other nominations in that field. The Banshees of Inisherin scribe Martin McDonagh won the live action short prize for Six Shooter in 2005 and was nominated for his screenplays for In Bruges and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. This is the first original screenplay mention for Tár writer Todd Field, who has previously been nominated for adapted screenplays In the Bedroom and Little Children. This is the first mention for Everything Everywhere All at Once writers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, and for Triangle of Sadness scribe Ruben Östlund, though his film The Square was nominated for Best International Feature in 2017. McDonagh got an early start with a Golden Globe win and then took home the BAFTA, while he lost to the Daniels at the Critics Choice Awards. EEAAO also won with the Writers Guild of America, where The Banshees of Inisherin was not eligible
