On August 8th, 2026, the Ojai Playhouse will launch Left Turn, a new programming series uplifting new independent filmmaker voices and providing an unforgettable destination for audiences to come together in community in one of California’s most historic independent theaters. The one-day film showcase will allow attendees to catch the most talked-about independent releases, with participating filmmakers to speak in live Q&As following their respective screenings.

The inaugural Left Turn festival showcase on August 8 is an independent and unflinching collection of modern portraits of America. Barbed with razor sharp satire and buzzing with compelling American auteurism, the one-day showcase lineup curated by Staley Sharples will feature ‘$positions’ (SXSW World Premiere), ‘Crumb Catcher’ (Fantastic Fest World Premiere), ‘Our Hero, Balthazar’ (Tribeca World Premiere), ‘The Napa Boys’ (TIFF World Premiere), ‘Situations’ (Oldenburg Film Festival World Premiere, acquired by Utopia’s Circle Collective) and Independent Spirit Award Nominee Annapurna Sriram’s ‘Fucktoys’ (SXSW Narrative Feature Special Jury Award Winner).

Located in the heart of Ojai, California, the Ojai Playhouse was built in 1914 and stands as one of the first single-screen cinemas in the state. The Playhouse helped set early standards for cinema technology as California grew to lead global entertainment, and offers an intimate and immersive experience for film and art enthusiasts locally and beyond. The Left Turn film showcase series is an expansive next step in carrying out the collective mission of the Ojai Playhouse. Theater owner and programmer David Berger shares he is “thrilled to host this eclectic lineup and welcome the filmmakers and fans of indie cinema to the Ojai Playhouse.”

Calling upon the punk rock-ethos of indie filmmaking’s heyday and the importance of human-made art, the initial slate of films is a celebration of DIY counterculture, with creative branding to reflect the political pop-art grit and tongue-in-cheek shock value of the 1990s and 2000s. To capture the spirit of these films and their alternate American realities, creative branding consultant and designer Harrison Neef explains, “the visual direction for Left Turn was heavily inspired by drive-in movie nights and the feeling of community around sharing cinema as a culture and pastime. Playing on bright colors and DIY-collage style image compositions, we’ve pulled from the nostalgia of yesterday to highlight the films of tomorrow.”

“The lineup that Ojai Playhouse has assembled for Left Turn is absolutely incredible,” says ‘$positions’ filmmaker Brandon Daley about the Ojai premiere of his cryptocurrency thriller. “It’s such an honor to be screening alongside genuinely some of the best indies from the last year.”

“There’s a reason Ojai has long been a refuge for artists,” ‘Crumb Catcher’ writer and director Chris Skotchdopole expands ahead of the Ojai launch of his timely home invasion thriller. “It’s a place that encourages reflection over distraction, and I’m excited for ‘Crumb Catcher’ to be included in Left Turn’s slate of boldly resonant films.”

Also making their debut in Ojai are Greg Vrotsos’s semi-autobiographical ‘Situations’ and the critically acclaimed finger-on-the-pulse satire ‘Our Hero, Balthazar.’ Vrotsos shares, “Ojai’s been on our radar since we heard about the theater over a year ago. To be playing up there with these original and raw independent films makes this even more special. ‘Situations’ isn’t just an LA story; it’s a universal story and bringing it up to Ojai where people tend to escape the craziness of LA will make this even more relatable and worthwhile. David and the Playhouse are doing it right up there.”

Though an “NYC-based cinephile,” ‘Our Hero, Balthazar’ director Oscar Boyson claims, “not a week goes by where I don’t hear about some amazing screening at this wonderful cinema the Ojai Playhouse, and think to myself that I’d absolutely be there if I lived on the west coast. It’s an honor to see ‘Our Hero, Balthazar’ find a place in such esteemed and audience-driven programming.” Peter Gold of distributor WG Pictures says, “the Ojai Playhouse is a special place, and David Berger has been a true champion of independent cinema. Ojai is the perfect setting to discover great films, and the team has put together a fantastic lineup.”

Returning to the Ojai Playhouse after highly-attended initial screenings are independent cult favorites ‘Fucktoys’ and ‘The Napa Boys.’ Writer-director Annapurna Sriram is “excited to be playing ‘Fucktoys’ at one of the coolest theaters on the west coast with most definitely the hottest audience in the seats. Big thanks to the Ojai Playhouse for putting together this lineup and programming real movies. Long live independent film and cinemas!”

Filmmakers Armen Weitzman and Nick Corirossi are eager to bring ‘The Napa Boys’ for an encore of their rowdy meta-comedy at the Ojai Playhouse to their devoted fanbase. “Ojai is known as the ‘Napa of the South’, and the ‘Hollywood of Ventura County’ – we are honored,” Weitzman and Corirossi shared.
