Even the most well-intentioned people must struggle to overcome their own egos, professional biases and personal insecurities when they’re tasked with saving the fate of civilization. That’s certainly true for the group of experts, including scientists, politicians, lawyers and philosophers, in the upcoming drama, ‘A Statement.’
The group met at a beachside resort in Florida in 1980 to discuss the dangers of rising carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. The real-life conference inspired the film’s unique narrative, which only features dialogue that was actually spoken during the meeting. Every sentence derives, verbatim, from the transcript written by a stenographer hired by Congress to record the meeting for posterity.
Academy Award-winning filmmaker Tom McCarthy (‘Spotlight’) directed ‘A Statement.’ The movie stars an ensemble cast, led by Emmy Award nominee Paul Rudd Evan Peters, Amy Ryan, Paul Giamatti, John Turturro, Tatiana Maslany, Nina Arianda and Jason Clarke. Thomas Bidegan, Noé Debré and McCarthy adapted the feature from the 2019 book ‘Losing Earth: A Recent History’ by Nathaniel Rich.
‘A Statement’ premiered in the Spotlight section at Film at Lincoln Center’s 64th New York Film Festival (NYFF). The drama had its World Premiere last night, Saturday, October 3 at Film at Lincoln Center’s (FLC) Alice Tully Hall.
The movie’s next NYFF screening will be held tonight, Sunday, October 4 at 9:00pm ET, as well as this Tuesday, October 6 at 3:45pm ET and next Sunday, October 11. All of the remaining screenings will be held at FLC’s Walter Reade Theater. Sony Pictures Classics will release the film in theaters later this year.
To help promote ‘A Statement’s World Premiere at NYFF, McCarthy, Rudd, Giamatti, Turturro, Ryan, Maslany and Rich participated in a press conference yesterday afternoon. The chat was held at the Walter Reade Theater following the drama’s press and industry screening.
NYFF programmer Justin Chang hosted the film’s press conference. Watch the ‘A Statement’ NYFF press conference in the above video.
