Two of this year’s nominated production designers have good histories with the filmmakers they’ve once again collaborated with this year. Elvis production designer Catherine Martin has once ever been nominated for Baz Lurhmann films, first for Romeo + Juliet and then winning for both Moulin Rouge! and The Great Gatsby. Rick Carter, who this year worked on The Fabelmans, won for the first Avatar and also for Lincoln. Additionally, she was nominated for Forrest Gump and War Horse. The Fabelmans set decorator Karen O’Hara was previously nominated for The Color of Money and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and won for Alice in Wonderland. At the Art Directors Guild Awards, Avatar: The Way of Water lost the fantasy prize to Everything Everywhere All at Once, while Babylon defeated the other three nominees in this category: Elvis, The Fabelmans, and All Quiet on the Western Front. At the Set Decorators of America Awards, Elvis beat out Babylon and The Fabelmans, while Avatar: The Way of Water once again lost to Everything Everywhere All at Once. While the lavish recreation of one musician’s life might be enough to win over voters, it feels likelier that the excess of all of Hollywood in Babylon will take this trophy.
Should win: Babylon
