This category boasts a handful of previous nominees, with only Shirley Kurata new to the lineup for Everything Everywhere All at Once. Last year’s winner Jenny Beavan, who has won trophies for A Room with a View, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Cruella, is up this year for Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, the only nominee with no other nominations this year. This is the fourth nomination for Babylon costume designer Mary Zophres, who was previously cited for True Grit, La La Land, and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Ruth E. Carter, up for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, won for the first Black Panther and was also nominated for Malcolm X and Amistad. Catherine Martin, up this year for Elvis, has only ever been nominated for Baz Luhrmann collaborations, winning for Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby, with an additional nomination for Australia. At the Costume Designers Guild Awards, Everything Everywhere All at Once defeated Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Elvis beat Babylon and Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris. This feels like a three-way race with no clear frontrunner, and excess on display in all three, and it’s always possible that Everything Everywhere All at Once could repeat its CDG victory thanks to the general swell of enthusiasm for the film right now.
Should win: Babylon
