The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is continuing its cherished tradition of featuring emotionally powerful and visually stunning projects from around the world with its current slate. This year’s edition of the Ontario-based festival, which will run September 10 through September 20, is sure to leave audiences captivated by its diverse and exciting line-up.

Screenings of the movies included in the festival will take place at several theaters across Toronto. TIFF will return to its renowned festival venues across the Canadian city’s downtown district, including the TIFF Bell Lightbox, Roy Thomson Hall and Scotiabank Theatre.

Audiences are sure to love the features that are screening throughout the festival, including the horror movie, ‘River.’ The drama will have its World Premiere at TIFF on Thursday, September 10 at 11:59pm ET at the Royal Alexandra Theatre. The project will serve as the Opening Night film of the Midnight Madness program.

The film will also screen during the festival on Friday, September 11 at 9:40pm ET at Scotiabank Theatre. Its final TIFF screening will be held on Friday, September 18 at 6:10pm ET at Scotiabank Theatre Toronto.

Following the feature’s premiere at TIFF, Independent Film Company will handle its U.S. theatrical distribution. Shudder will then release the drama on its streaming service.

Joshua Giuliano wrote and directed ‘River.’ The movie stars genre veteran Jane Levy, scream queen Jessica Rothe, ‘Cape Fear’ star Max Mattern and creature-feature veteran Dane DiLiegro.

‘River’ follows three estranged siblings as they reunite in their hometown after the death of their father and set out to scatter his ashes at his favorite spot on a remote river. But when their boat breaks down, the trip devolves into a waking nightmare.

Stranded miles from help with no cell service, they soon realize they’re being stalked by a faceless killer who has emerged from the woods. To survive the night, the siblings must put their long-standing grudges aside and fight together against a ruthless, almost mythic terror.

Attendees are also sure to love several television series that are screening throughout the festival, including the horror show, ‘Crystal Lake.’ The highly-anticipated slasher series will have its World Premiere at TIFF on Wednesday, September 16 at 9:30pm ET at TIFF Lightbox. The drama will also screen the next two days, on Thursday, September 17 at 9:30pm ET at Scotiabank Theatre, and Saturday, September 19 at 9:15pm ET at TIFF Lightbox.

The new A24 show will feature eight 60-minute episodes. It’s set to debut on Thursday, October 15 on Peacock

The season’s directors include Michael Lennox (episodes 101-103), Celine Held and Logan George (episodes 104-106), and Quyen Tran (episodes 107-108). Brad Caleb Kane served as the season’s creator, writer, showrunner and executive producer. The series stars Linda Cardellini as Pamela Vorhees, as well as William Catlett, Devin Kessler and Cameron Scoggins.

A prequel to the ‘Friday the 13th’ franchise, ‘Crystal Lake’ follows single mother Pam Voorhees, who has been unable to shake her grief after her young, sickly son Jason tragically drowned in the town lake almost a year before. When two strangers arrive at Pam’s door digging into her past, a disturbing chain of events is set into motion, leaving the townspeople of Crystal Lake wondering: just who is Pam Voorhees?

Audiences are also sure to love another genre television show that’s set to screen at the festival, ‘Yaga,’ the highly-anticipated horror show from Crave and AMC+. The fantasy thriller will have its World Premiere as part of the Primetime category at TIFF before its October release.

The series will premiere on Thursday, September 17 at 9pm ET at the TIFF Lightbox. The show will also screen the next day, Friday, September 18 at 2:45pm ET.

Sam Krochmal stars on the drama alongside Carrie-Anne Moss, Clark Backo, Hudson Williams and Noah Reid. The series was adapted from the hit stage play of the same name by writer and showrunner Kat Sandler. Rachel Talalay and David Frazee directed the upcoming television adaptation.

In ‘Yaga,’ Carson (Backo) is a local detective, at once weary and protective of the small coastal town she serves and its inhabitants. After the disappearance of commercial fishery heir and local party boy Henry Park (William), Carson begrudgingly partners up with Rapp (Reid), a private investigator hired by the Park family. Rapp arrives on the scene with a bemused swagger and a personal connection to the case that immediately raises Carson’s hackles.

Their initial lines of questioning lead them to an enigmatic and seductive university professor, Catherine (Moss). In the process, it becomes clear that it’s going to require all hands on deck to uncover the truth hidden underneath these shrouds of secrecy.

Another movie sure to garner attention at TIFF is the 1-2 Special drama, ‘Everytime.’ The German/Austrian film will have its North American Premiere in the Centerpiece section.

The movie will have its first TIFF screening on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 at 3:25pm ET. The drama’s second screening at the Toronto-based festival will take place the next day, on Wednesday, September 16 at 2:30pm ET. Both screenings will be held at Scotiabank Theatre. ‘Everytime’s TIFF screening comes after the drama had its World Premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Un Certain Regard Award.

Sandra Wollner wrote and directed the movie. Birgit Minichmayr, Lotte Shirin Keiling, Naomi Elia Richard, Tristan Lopez and Carla Hüttermann star in the drama.

‘Everytime’ chronicles a tragedy that brings a mother, daughter, and teenage boy together. Struggling with blame and forgiveness, the unlikely trio take a trip to Tenerife for a family holiday that never happened. Under the glow of the sun, past and present quietly start to overlap.

TIFF audiences will also surely be intrigued by the documentary, ‘Rescue.’ The film is set to have its World Premiere in the TIFF Docs section at the festival.

The movie’s premiere screening will be held on Tuesday, September 15 at 12:15pm ET. The second screening will then take place on Thursday, September 17 at 6:15pm ET. Both screenings will take place at Scotiabank Theatre.

Sine Plambech and Janus Metz wrote the documentary. Plambech went on to direct the film. The movie is presented in Arabic, English and French with English subtitles.

‘Rescue.’ is the extraordinary true story of one woman’s refusal to disappear. The film also chronicles her relentless search for justice, dignity and the right to be seen.

Roro, a Yemeni mother with young children, fights to reunite her family after surviving a Mediterranean rescue that separated her from her husband and left her in captivity in Libya. Filmed with unprecedented access to Doctors Without Borders boat, the Geo Barents, the movie exposes the consequences of Europe’s outsourcing migration control to North African countries through “Externalization.” ‘Rescue’ is a deeply moving story, told through the journey of a woman caught in a broken system, and her unbreakable determination to reunite her family and pursue a better life.
