Despite Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio making three separate Oscar shortlists, this is the only nomination for all five films in this category. That film, which cleaned up at the Annie Awards and has also taken home prizes from BAFTA, the Critics Choice Awards, and more, comes from Netflix, a previous two-time nominee, that also made The Sea Beast, which comes from director Chris Williams, a previous winner for Big Hero 6. This category’s biggest juggernaut, Pixar, which has produced eleven wins out of sixteen nominations, is behind Turning Red. The only sequel in the mix, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, comes from DreamWorks Animation, which has two wins out of thirteen nominations. The first Puss in Boots contended in 2011. Marcel the Shell with Shoes On represents A24’s first recognition in the category.
