Sony Pictures Releasing pulled back the curtain on the next chapter in its long-running horror franchise last night at this year’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas. The distributor debuted the first trailer and poster for ‘Insidious: Out of the Further.’ The assets for the sixth installment in the hit horror series were released to support the film’s release in theaters on August 21.
The sequel was directed by Jacob Chas, who also co-wrote the screenplay with David Leslie Johnson. The film stars Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea, Misie Richardson-Sellers, Sam Spruell, Laura Gordon, Island Austin and returning franchise veteran, Lin Shaye. Producers Jason Blum, Oren Peli, James Wan and Leigh Whannell, all of whom helped shape the franchise into a global phenomenon, also returned to the sixth entry.
‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ follows Gemma (Eve), a young mother who returns to her childhood home with her daughter. But once there, she uncovers a terrifying connection to The Further, the eerie spirit realm central to the series’ mythology.
Unlike those before her, Gemma possesses a dangerous new ability: not only can she enter The Further, but she can also bring entities from it back into the real world. As sinister forces become aware of her power, the boundary between worlds begins to collapse, unleashing chaos.
First launched theatrically in 2011, the series has become one of the most successful in modern horror. Its most recent entry, ‘Insidious: The Red Door,’ was the biggest hit in the franchise, earning nearly $200 million worldwide. Altogether, the series has grossed more than $740 million globally since its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2010.
