A master of cinema whose towering influence extends across visual art, philosophy, politics, technology, fashion, and beyond, Stanley Kubrick created an unprecedented and indelible string of masterpieces, from Paths of Glory, Dr. Strangelove, and 2001: A Space Odyssey to A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, and Eyes Wide Shut. Bending disparate genres to his will, he imbued his creations with a cuttingly ironic worldview and an iconographic, mesmerizingly precise visual style, probing the anxieties, enigmas and horrors of the twentieth century with a coolly devastating eye. Now, with The Complete Kubrick, the Criterion Collection is taking audiences back to a time when adult theatrical filmgoing and thought-provoking art weren’t nearly mutually exclusive — bringing together the entirety of a body of work that opened popular cinema up to new realms of moral profundity and metaphysical mystery.
“The Complete Kubrick took two years to achieve, but as Kubrick fans know, one’s relationship with his films never truly ends,” said Michael Chaiken, Criterion producer. “It was an honor to be asked to produce this set and an enormous responsibility: to the fans, to the Kubrick estate, and ultimately to Kubrick himself, whose commitment to the presentation of his work remained constant throughout his life. To that end, Criterion consulted Kubrick’s closest collaborators, archival experts, and the studios that have stewarded his films across generations, ensuring that these works look and sound better than they ever have on home video. As the set’s many interviews and documentaries reveal, behind Kubrick’s darkly comic vision is a world of family, friends, and enduring creative relationships that speak to the humanist center of this singular body of work.”
For the first time, The Complete Kubrick brings together thirteen features and three shorts from the master filmmaker, all restored in 4K, with Kubrick’s original soundtracks alongside the 5.1 mixes, restored and remastered. Spread out over thirty discs, the collection includes over twenty-five hours of interviews, documentaries, and behind-the-scenes materials, plus deluxe packaging illustrated with rare photographs, artwork, and documents annotated by Kubrick himself, all housed in a singular box inspired by the director’s legendary archive.
