The most prolific heroes – both in real life and on screen – rely on high-stakes moments of espionage, deception and extraordinary ingenuity during wartime. That’s certainly the case for the Allied soldiers who outwitted Adolf Hitler’s Nazi forces through psychological warfare and ingenious fabrications, which are shown in the new action-adventure drama, ‘Fortitude.’
The soldiers’ resourcefulness is showcased in the film’s newly released official trailer. The trailer chronicles the true story of the deception campaign that helped set the stage for D-Day.
Written and produced by Simon Afram and directed by Simon West, ‘Fortitude’ centers on the British intelligence operation that deceived Hitler’s Nazi forces in the lead-up to the Allied invasion of Normandy. Matthew Goode and Ed Skrein lead the cast as Thomas Argyll “TAR” Robertson and Dudley Clarke, respectively, the fearless and unpredictable spy-soldiers at the heart of the mission.
The movie’s ensemble also includes Jordi Mollà, Alice Eve, Art Malik, Lukas Haas, Adrian Topol, Emilio Sakraya, Maeve Courtier-Lilley and Paul Anderson, with Sir Ben Kingsley, Michael Sheen and Nicolas Cage also starring in the historical drama.
Sheen portrays Winston Churchill, while Malik takes on the role of Ian Fleming, the British intelligence figure who would go on to create James Bond. Cage plays Dusko Popov, the real-life double agent whose exploits helped inspire Fleming’s iconic fictional spy. Mollà portrays Juan Pujol, the Spanish chicken farmer who became a pivotal figure in Allied deception efforts, while Eve plays Nancy Armstrong, a leading British intelligence agent.
At the center of ‘Fortitude’ is an audacious plan to convince the Nazi high command that Allied forces would strike somewhere other than Normandy. The operation deploys a fictitious army, fake tanks, aircraft and ships, actors and carefully constructed false radio messages, all designed to manipulate German intelligence and divert enemy resources from the invasion’s actual target.
The film draws on Operation Fortitude, a critical component of the broader Allied deception strategy surrounding D-Day. By feeding German intelligence a carefully orchestrated web of misinformation, Allied planners sought to conceal the location and scale of the Normandy landings, helping protect the operation that would become a turning point in World War II.
Blending historical drama with espionage and large-scale action, ‘Fortitude’ positions the secret war of misinformation as an adventure driven as much by nerve and improvisation as by military strategy. The movie’s ensemble brings together established Hollywood names and international talent for a story about the agents, elaborate fabrications and calculated risks behind one of the most consequential deception campaigns in modern history.
With its combination of World War II history, covert intelligence operations and an ensemble led by Cage, Goode, Skrein and Sheen, ‘Fortitude’ brings a remarkable chapter of the Allied campaign into focus: the battle to win not only on the battlefield, but in the minds of the enemy.
